Topographic Survey

A topographic survey, also known as a topo survey, provides detailed information about the height, depth, size, and location of both manmade and natural features on a specific parcel of land.

It captures the changes and contours in elevation across the area.

While boundary surveys concentrate on horizontal measurements, topographic surveys focus on vertical elevation.

Conducting a Topo Survey

To carry out a topographic survey, a high-quality global positioning system (GPS) unit and an electronic distance measurement (EDM) total station theodolite (TST) are utilized to pinpoint the locations of various features depicted on the survey plan. The resulting topographic survey illustrates existing features, property lines, and contour lines that reflect the land’s topography.

Applications of Topo Surveys

Land survey services are often requested to produce topographic surveys for:

Construction and architectural projects

Environmental restoration and property improvements

Compliance with construction code regulations

Planning for grading or drainage systems

Adapting land developed for one use to a different purpose
